Election Defense

This season, Singing Resistance's top priority is to defend our elections from threats of sabotage. Most of us want the same thing: a country where everyone, no matter their race, faith, zip code, ability, or income, can live with safety, dignity, and have a real voice in what comes next. But right now, the people in charge of our government are trying to keep us from voting so they can seize more power.
Singing Resistance is organizing across the country to defend our elections. Join us!

the threat

We are already seeing the attacks in our communities: the FBI raiding an organization doing electoral work in Ohio, or the Voting Rights Act being gutted by the Supreme Court. They're threatening to send ICE to the polls to intimidate voters, they're spreading lies and misinformation about voter fraud, and they're threatening to purge people from the voting rolls. We are in an acute moment of authoritarian consolidation, and the next months leading up to the midterms are pivotal.
Their entire strategy depends on dividing us by race: convincing white Americans that election fraud is a problem caused by Black and brown voters, and convincing communities of color that the system is too broken to bother with.
We aren't trying to go back to business as usual. Democracy has only ever been available to some people in this country and not others, based on race, gender, nationality. We are working towards true multiracial democratic governance. Right now, we have to defend our democratic institutions so that we can then transform them to work for everyone.
We have tremendous power to push back and build a national movement to protect our communities and our rights. It’s going to take all of us, and we’re starting now so we can be ready to respond in key moments.
Our Election Defense Strategy
Singing Resistance has a three part strategy to defend our elections:

Activate the vote
Ensure that people are registered to vote, voting early, and encouraging others to vote.

Stop attempts to sabotage the vote
If local election administrators or elected officials try to make changes that make it harder to vote or have a free and fair election, we can be ready to respond fast. We will sing at the polls on election day to create a positive community presence, and to keep watch for any interference.

Mass economic noncooperation
There will be moments when we all need to move as one to stop egregious action, and we can get prepared and connected in advance. Our movements are preparing to pressure corporations to withdraw their support from the administration if lines get crossed, because we know this is one of our best avenues to exert real power over those in charge.
